It was another chilly and windy day… not at all a typical south Florida day. So much for the tee shirts and shorts I packed! I walked down to the most southernmost point in the US landmark — a buoy where people line up nicely to take photos of each other and yourself there. Silly, but the touristy thing to do.
After meeting up with Erica there we went to the Butterfly Conversancy. In a small greenhouse there were over 1,500 butterflies, 50 or so species all flying about in a space with local, tropical plants and some birds. Visitors were asked to walk along the pathway (and be careful were you walk so as not to step on one), nad they say that it’s good luck if one lands on you. There were several bird species too, and flamingos named Brett and Scarlett. It was peaceful, wonderful and magical. Took us to a different, very zen place. There were windows into the “nursery” where we were able to see some “hatching” from their cocoons. Just wonderful.
I decided to explore the southern part of the island, so walked for much of the afternoon — different beaches and coves. It was too cold to be on the beach, but there were some beautiful spots. I stopped by the market on way back to the apartment to pick up some fish for dinner, and we had a lovely dinner here.
I took a bike down to the White Street Pier for sunset — it was COLD — and the clouds prevented much of a sunset, but it was still a pretty sight.
And that was the day… lots of walking, slow and easy, and avoidance of the madness of upper Duval Street!
