Day 15, Stage 14: Hornillos del Camino to Castrojeriz

Kim and I in Burgos

Kim and I in Burgos

The weather had suggested rain once again, but after a significant thunder and lightning storm last night it had cleared out so we had the most amazing clear day.  The Casa Rural last night was homey, as was the dinner and breakfast and Kim and I were transported back to Hornillos by about 8AM, where we joined the Camino and began our journey.

In town we searched out Chris and Vicki and while we decided to walk on, we met grandfather Neville and grandson Chris from NZ.  We walked some with Neville, 78 year old Anglican priest and enjoyed the beautiful sunrise and the early morning on the Meseta.  Many on the Camino are not appreciating the stark beauty of this section of the way.  It is like Kansas with rolling hills — lots of wheat fields and hay stacks and not much else until you come across a glade of Aspen trees and the wonderful sound they make in the wind.  We came across one 2-3 km stretch that was terribly muddy and it was sticky and heavy mud that made it very slow going.  With only one town between start and finish (Hontanas), we had to fuel up whenever possible.

We also walked for a bit with Lee and David from Australia, a young couple who Kim had met before and who had some interesting views on how not to miss the little things.  They had a whole set of pictures of the small insects and other creepy crawlies that you see along the way.  Today was a tiny snake and a walking stick.

We met up with Chris and Vicki for drinks/dinner, added Sylvia from RI, and within a short time had Juliette from France and Henry and Clare from London on board.  While sitting on the patio with an amazing view of the skyline and wheat fields 4 gentlemen began singing and playing a recorder and using scallop shells as an instrument.  Will try to upload video of another impromptu musical event tomorrow.  We added two Irish sisters that Sylvia knew and it was a large and very fun camino dinner party.  All for 10 Euros each!

I’m in Castrojeriz for 2 nights so will write more about the area, the town and the history in tomorrow’s entry.  I have all day, and since I’m unable to find a lavanderia, the bathroom sink will have to do for my laundry needs!

Limited in photos today; having a difficult time getting them uploaded to the cloud.
