This will be the last post of this adventure. Because today barely qualifies, and tomorrow will be just a road trip driving home from Phoenix to Los Angeles. But today was recuperation and luxury and the recognition of how very lucky I am to have to had the chance to see such amazing places on this trip.
I’m at a fancy luxury hotel with scores of long weekenders and their families, filling up the pools and golf courses and spa. I relaxed by the pool, and had a wonderful hot tub/steam/massage this afternoon, and dinner on the terrace. And I will have another great sleep in a heavenly bed and will look forward to my own heavenly bed at home beginning tomorrow night.
Here’s what I learned on this Southwestern Road Trip:
1) The southern part of Arizona and New Mexico were part of Mexico until the Gasden purchase in 1853. So the Mexican influences across these states come honestly.
2) Saguaro cactus can live over 300 years, but grow very slowly. And the blooming season is very short, and I was lucky to be here in that season.
3) I can sleep in a tent. On an air mattress. And I can go without mascara. Not well, but it’s possible.
4) While it would be nice to have a traveling companion, it’s sometimes easier to not have to worry about someone else, and to choose trails and places to eat and rest stops on your own.
5) It’s possible to smuggle booze into an Indian reservation, but it helps if it’s well hidden. (So thanks to my friend Donna for the flask disguised as a tube of suntan lotion)!
And so I’m signing off. Lorrie out. Mic drop.
Until next time….
Just great, Lorrie, I have enjoyed it all, great words, great photos, however there is always someone jumping up waving their arms in the photos.
